Alex Stepman: An SEO Pioneer
SEO Engineer, Digital Marketing Expert
I learned my first SEO lessons while designing and developing a website for a small remodeling company. It was 2005, the early days of SEO, and I had built the site with a popular WYSIWYG (What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get) tool available at the local Walmart for $30. The website was 100% functional, yet it was invisible in search results.
At that time, SEO was about as trusted as a UFO sighting, and most people had not even heard of the term. Website owners did not even care about visibility in search results, and online marketing was relatively unknown.
Since SEO was new to users as well as the search engines, finding reliable information was impossible. However, soon the search engines began to implement logic to on-page elements, shifting search engine visibility for many websites. With the release of each new logic my website vanished from search results. To keep pace, I studied the new logic—one release at a time.
Today this logic, known as the algorithm, governs over 200 requirements or “factors,” some on-page and some off-page. Like most SEO serious professionals, I strive to maintain a current understanding of these factors. For me, the learning curve is not too steep: It’s still just one release at a time.
However, rapid improvements in technology and web development as well as sheer search engine ingenuity have made this work increasingly difficult. For most people starting out in SEO today the algorithm poses a true Sisyphean task.
The fundamental problem is the learning curve. By the time beginners learn basic SEO theory and implementation, the search engines have released a new set of logic or new technologies. For many, it is impossible to understand how SEO is working or, perhaps more importantly, not working.
My Proprietary Algorithm Delivers Consistent Results
From day one in the SEO industry, I have delivered positive results for my clients. As I continue to hone my unique approach to website optimization, I have discovered new ways to meet the ever-evolving challenge of SEO and online marketing. I have learned that search engines improve their algorithms for two primary reasons:
- To deliver the most relevant and accurate results
- To combat the spam that clogs the Internet with useless or harmful content
The varying nature of the algorithms is difficult to parse, but we do understand a simple fact: Each search engine delivers different results. A website visible in Google might not be visible in Yahoo or Bing.
Of course, I practice the best SEO practices recommended by the major search engines. Yet I have also improved search engine logic itself by creating my own algorithm—an algorithm now accepted by all major search engines. My unique algorithm is not limited to any single search engine and can be implemented on any search engine worldwide regardless of language or target audience.
Most of the websites I have designed and developed are for companies located in the United States, so my primary search engines include Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, and AOL. I have also implemented my algorithm on Yandex—the largest search engine in the Russian Federation and former Soviet Union—with consistently positive results. In fact, most of the websites I have developed and optimized are now visible in most search engines’ first page results.
Using my algorithm for my clients, I target hyper-specific audiences, attracting the right traffic and to preventing the wrong traffic from unwanted demographics. This precise targeting is widely available through paid advertising, yet few SEO professionals understand how to organically control traffic.
From Visibility to Profits: Optimizing for Conversions
Too many websites function as high-priced business cards, mere information portals for browsers who already know the business. Over the years, even as I have honed my SEO skills, assuring visibility for each client website, I have maintained a consistent focus on profits.
At SEO Sparta, I now devote my time and talent to optimizing websites to generate conversions—the translation of visitors, or potential customers, into actual customers.
For my clients at SEO Sparta, I utilize a host of online marketing techniques, including organic SEO, online reputation management (ORM), and content marketing, to attract new customers, profits, and success.
